Message from the Author
Hey Readers of Tomorrow,
I moved this section up for this newsletter since I totally slacked and forgot to put one together for February. I know, shameful, but I promise it was for a good reason! I’ve been grinding on my writing, and have made some amazing progress.
I wanted to take this moment to share that you don’t have to hit every mark every time in life. Sometimes it gets away from you. As long as you’re working at what you want, then you’re doing just fine. The world has enough expectations that we can’t let one miss drag us down.
If you want to see what made me totally forget about the shift from January to February… keep reading.
FROM THE WRITING DESK
Current Project: Please Subscribe
Progress Update: I’ve been hard at work revising Please Subscribe into the story that I know it can be. One of the challenges as a writer is finishing a pass and realizing that I have either created new gaps or discovered old gaps that need to be tightened. It’s a continuous process, and where this is my first novel I’m truly trying to get representation for, I don’t know what is good enough. I believe I’m almost ready to send the manuscript to literary agents. There will always be a sentence I can tighten, an emotion better shown, or a tangent cleaned up. A common saying in the creative industry is that “Art is never complete, only abandoned.” So, maybe I’m just reaching the point where I need to abandon for now and allow the work to tell me what’s next. Overall, I’m extremely proud of this story’s development since the first draft.
Writing Progress: 7th Draft 50% Complete • 87,210 words
What’s next: I’m researching literary agents and plan to start the querying process. Wish me luck! After that, I’ll begin working on my next book, which is still up in the air as to what book that will be.
BOOK SPOTLIGHT
Story Update: The Great Salt Bowl (Revised Edition)
I’ve just published a revised edition of The Great Salt Bowl, incorporating beta reader feedback.
Key improvements:
- Enhanced medical accuracy (timeline and symptoms)
- Clearer progression markers throughout
- Refined character development and pacing
- Stronger demonstration of Alice’s growth
The story’s emotional core and major plot points remain the same—this revision focused on technical polish and clarity.
If you’ve already read it, no need to re-read unless you’re interested in craft improvements. If you haven’t yet, this is the definitive version.
WHAT I’M READING
Books that have caught my attention this month:
• Tarzan of the Apes (Book 1) by Edgar Rice Boroughs – This classic tale of Tarzan impressed me more than I expected. I think Disney created such a prominent image for the story that we often forget it was a book first. I loved the realness of the book version of Tarzan. It’s clinical and calculated in the treatment of Tarzan’s behaviors, and doesn’t give in to the tropes in the end. I’d recommend this to anyone looking for a more realistic adventure tale that doesn’t pull any punches. The last twist at the end kept it from falling into a cliché.
•American Gods by Neil Gaiman- American Gods had me hooked from the opening. It ties you to the main character and keeps you invested throughout the story. I loved the feel of the old-school mythology mixed with modern American gods. An inevitable conflict, and some truly satisfying moments as we meet the gods created by America. I’d highly recommend this if you enjoy mythology, liminal stories, or something that makes you lean back and think.
• That’s Not My Name by Megan Lally – That’s Not My Name is a great YA thriller that has some of the best twists I’ve read in a while. The reason I recommend this is that the twist isn’t just a surprise; it’s heartbreaking. You’ve invested so much throughout the story that you’re both sad and happy at the reveal. The characters are well-developed, and the epilogue truly ties up the story nicely. The narrative can be slightly repetitive, but other than that, it’s a great book! I would recommend this to anyone who’s looking for a YA thriller that focuses on character and has good story structure.
