FROM THE WRITING DESK
Current Project: Lords of Wishermoore Book 1 (Lord Meryth POV)
Progress Update: I used November’s Novel Writing Month to help me push through some mental barriers I was having on this first draft! I was able to complete the first book in the Lords of Wishermoore Trilogy a few days before the deadline of November 30th! I can’t wait to work on this one further and refine my magical Pokemon trainers against super saiyan vikings. The Lords of Wishermoore started as a joke with some coworkers and turned into an epic fantasy, and that has been so much fun to share the excitement with my coworkers.
Writing Progress: 100% Complete • 114,173 words
What’s Next: Next, I’ll be working on the next revision of Please Subscribe. This should be more of an edit, focusing on sentence-level work. I want to get this polished and start sending out to find agents starting in January. I’m hoping to get some more of my old serial fictions revised and re-posted on the website and possibly other platforms like RoyalRoad or Wattpad. Let me know if you read on either of these platforms!
BOOK SPOTLIGHT
The Great Salt Bowl Genre: Cli-fi Thriller • Status: Fully Released!
Alice pushes through dust and decay, following roads long abandoned. Every step is a fight against poisoned skies, crumbling bridges, and the memory of friends she couldn’t save. The Great Salt Bowl is broken, unpredictable, and cruel. Yet even here, where everything works to grind her down, she clings to a flicker of hope. It’s the only thing left driving her into the unknown. The question is, will it be enough to face what waits in the Great Salt Bowl?
“Waves of dust scattered across the abandoned landscape. Our only landmark was the side of the mountain. No roads. No signs. Just dust and silence.”
WHAT I’M READING
Books that have caught my attention this month:
• Funny Story by Emily Henry – My wife shared this book with me, and I love it! Funny Story is ideal for millennial readers because of all the nostalgic references. The love story was well done and showed a great balance between the romance and a well-structured plot. If you want to read a book that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, then Funny Story is the book for you!
• The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold – I found this fantasy story on a random online list of series to read. The Curse of Chalion had a great character arc that showed a broken man rising higher than he ever expected to be once again. If you’re looking for a fantasy story that shows how actions of the past impact the present, this is the story for you!
• Refuse to Be Done: How to Write and Rewrite a Novel in Three Drafts by Matt Bell – I feel like finding true advice and techniques on revision are sparse. As a writer, we always hear how good writing is re-writing, then the teachers say, well you just have to find your process. If you’re looking for somewhere to start this process, check out Refuse to Be Done!
PERSONAL REFLECTIONS
November showed me I can always do a bit more. I’m not saying that you should give up your balances in life, but to assess how much time you’re losing to mindless activities. With the challenge of writing 50,000 words in one month, I found I needed to use every free moment to write. Whether that was on the toilet, on my breaks at work, and in those small gaps of time that opened up for me. I used to mindlessly scroll the internet, social media, and play phone games for so much of that time. Once I filled every moment with writing, I found I was easily hitting my word count each day.
So, I hope that as we go into this new year, you can begin now. Begin focusing on your goals and assessing what steals your precious time. The thing is, I believe you can do it. I know that so many of us are stuck in the trap of wasting time. There are plenty of reasons that we ended up there, but if you’re still not living your dream, then it’s time to reassess the way you use those idle time in your life.
Let me know what goals you’re working on! I’d love to be a part of and support your journey!
