FROM THE WRITING DESK
Current Project: The Lords of Wishermoore Book 1 (Title TBD)
Progress Update: I’ve made good headway on the first book of The Lords of Wishermoore. I’ve already created a set of creatures that will be as key to the story as the Lords of Wishermoore. This is a fun story because it began as a joke between some coworkers that became something more in my mind. The current challenges for LoW have stemmed from the attempts to create unique creatures. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do, but so much of my experience with creatures stems from Pokemon that a lot of their elements filter into the story. I’m planning to have this draft done by the end of the year.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT
The Great Salt Bowl Genre: Cli-fi Thriller • Status: Chapter 1 releases October 3, 2025!
Alice pushes through dust and decay, following roads long abandoned. Every step is a fight against poisoned skies, crumbling bridges, and the memory of friends she couldn’t save. The Great Salt Bowl is broken, unpredictable, and cruel. Yet even here, where everything works to grind her down, she clings to a flicker of hope. It’s the only thing left driving her into the unknown. The question is, will it be enough to face what waits in the Great Salt Bowl?
“Waves of dust scattered across the abandoned landscape. Our only landmark was the side of the mountain. No roads. No signs. Just dust and silence.”
WHAT I’M READING
Books that have caught my attention this month:
• Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey – I loved this autobiography of such a great actor. Hearing the story of his growth from a normal kid to one of the most well-known actors in America is inspiring. I think you can learn a lot from McConaughey’s life and use those lessons to improve your own.
• The Second Foundation by Isaac Asimov – I love the large concept approach to this story. While it will help to have read the other books first, Asimov does a great job of tying in information from the past. The reason I loved this book so much was that it went back to its roots of intellectual strategy and twists that leave you smiling at the end of the book. It’s a masterclass in science fiction, and great for those who enjoy books that make you think.
• Dragon’s Trail by Joseph Malik – Dragon’s Trail was a really fun fantasy book that tied in some of my favorite elements of fantasy stories. When Jarrod and his friend are pulled from Earth into a fantasy realm they must move through this new world with only their own knowledge on a path to redemption. This is great if you’re looking for a good Bro-Fantasy where the focus is more on weapons, skills, and canoodling than it is on a major emotional path for the protagonist. Jarrod still has a great redemption arc though, so don’t dismiss it. This book won’t be for everyone, but I found it a refreshing read.
PERSONAL REFLECTIONS
Working on The Great Salt Bowl has been bringing up a lot of memories of trips to Antelope Island as a kid. While the road from Syracuse to the island felt like an eternity in length, I always enjoyed watching the water lap at the edges of the road as we drove along. Even through the rotten egg smell, you couldn’t help but appreciate the beauty of the water.
Then I took my wife to Antelope Island for her first time. I don’t think I’d been there since I was a teenager, and this was probably in 2021-2022 time frame. I’d heard about the water receding and more of the lake bed being exposed, but actually seeing it made it really sink in. I’m not an activist, but that contrast between the two memories really stuck with me until I read an article that started this story idea.
I wish I had saved the article to share it with you now, but I’ll link plenty in the posts ahead. The article talked about the heavy metals found on the newly exposed lake bed and the danger of it getting kicked up into the air that blew into the Salt Lake Valley. That got my mind turning on the possible side effects of the arsenic in the air and whether we’d be able to restore the Great Sale Lake before it was past saving.
So, yeah, I ran with that idea for the last few years, and what you see will be the culmination of the great what-if game my mind loves to create new story ideas out of.
I hope you enjoy it in the coming weeks!
