Throughout this year we’ve talked about magic and technology, separate and together. Each has their respective requirements, while we can observe some overlap between the two. The question becomes, how do we balance magic and technology in a unified world? The challenge comes from the two seeming illogically incompatible, but many stories of Science Fantasy and other genres are published every year.

Mixing technology and magic is a popular strategy when successfully integrated into stories. It’s important to understand the challenges of world-building, power balance, character development, and plot coherence when creating a balanced story.

First, let’s refresh on magic, technology, and the differences that keep them separate.

Understanding the Core Differences Between Tech and Magic

Defining Technology

Technology has a reliance on scientific principles and engineering. In this, technology is grounded in the laws of physics, chemistry, and other sciences. It involves the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, often through engineering and design. This would mean that your technology would either have to be based on current sciences, or be conceived as possible through our current understanding of science. Such examples might include artificial intelligence, quantum computing, or nanotechnology for the current/emerging technologies. While theoretical technologies include faster-than-light travel (FTL), teleportation, or Advanced robotics.

Technology also comes with an emphasis on empirical knowledge and repeatable processes. Empirical knowledge is evidence obtained directly or indirectly through observation or experimentation. (Britannica) Technology can be reproduced with the same components in the same way each time, which ensure predictability, reliability, and consistency.

Defining Magic

Magic operates through supernatural, inexplicable forces, and phenomena outside of natural laws. It breaks scientific principles and challenge accepted understandings. Magic involves forces and phenomena that cannot be explained by science. Scientists would be surprised if you could summon a floating fireball in your hand because it would need a fuel source that magic doesn’t need.

Magic is often associated with mysticism, the occult, or spiritual beliefs. It can involve rituals, spells, and the use of supernatural entities or energies. This often leads to different results based on participants’ skill level and other elements of implementation. The same spell could be read out loud by two different people and each might end up with slightly different, or very different, results.

Core Differences

• Basis of Operation: Technology is based on scientific principles, while magic relies on supernatural forces. You could call this a battle of the fine-tuned and the fickle. The challenge of mixing the known with the unknown can lead to conflicting rules within your world. So it’s up to you as the author to find where the known ends, the unknown begins, and how those tie together.
• Predictability: Technological processes are repeatable and predictable, whereas magic can be unpredictable and mysterious. While magic has some predictability, it often goes wrong because of variables like a misspoken word. In contrast, technology becomes more reliable in repeating and reproducing the desired effect. Your goal with this challenge is to explain why the magic behaved differently in one instance than in another. It may not come with great detail, but as long as the reader accepts that, there was a valid reason for the variation in magic at that point.

  • Technology: Typically relies on natural resources and scientific innovation. Common power sources include electricity, coal, and mechanical systems, all grounded in proven scientific principles.
  • Magic: Often draws from mystical or spiritual sources, such as mystical ley-lines of nature. These sources are usually not measurable by scientific means and are depicted as ever-present and flowing until they aren’t.
• Cultural Perception: Technology is a product of human ingenuity and progress, while magic is often viewed as ancient, mystical, and sometimes feared or revered.

Understanding these core differences can help in creating a coherent world where both elements coexist.

Strategies for Blending Tech and Magic Effectively

Establishing Clear Rules and Limitations

Defining the scope and boundaries of your technology and magic is crucial. As mentioned above, there’s a point where magic takes over and technology leaves off. Your technology may advance transportation, weapons, or daily life, but there is always a gap where a better design could exist. Instead of striving to fill that gap with more technology, integrate your magic here.

Clearly outline what technology and magic can and cannot do. While technology follows scientific principles for transportation, magic can defy those rules and enable faster travel. Then you need to consider the limitations. Alone, how does that same magic work without the technology? It may speed up your travel, but you don’t have the protection from the elements like you do with the transport. You can also limit power sources, resources required, or capabilities of the users.

Keeping your rules for technology and magic consistent will help your readers understand and believe in your story. We talked about consistency in the October Newsletter, and here are a few highlights to keep in mind as you work toward consistent logic and rules. You can specify these to apply to your combination of magic and technology.

Maintaining a consistent logic and rules framework is essential for the believability of your story. Inconsistencies can disrupt the reader’s immersion and trust in the narrative, making it harder for them to stay engaged with the story.

Setting clear rules and boundaries for your world helps maintain coherence and credibility. This not only keeps your creative ideas in check but also provides a sense of safety and reliability for your readers, allowing them to invest more deeply in your story and its characters.

Crafting Logical, Cohesive Connections

Exploring how technology and magic might logically interact. Let’s look at a possible fusion of magic and healing technologies. This device could be nanotechnology that repairs tissues. If you’ve ever recovered from an injury, you know it’s painful. What if you could minimize the pain without opioids and other wonderful medicines? To begin, healers can reduce pain while the nanobots do their job. Then, they can gradually incorporate runes or magic into the nanobots to provide numbing and healing assistance.

Find those connections on how the one can improve the other and you’ll keep your technology and magic fusion logical and cohesive. But what does it look like when it’s not working?

Avoiding contradictions or jarring juxtapositions can be a challenge as you try to create a unique world. Sometimes we lose ourselves in the worlds we create. Complex integrations confuse readers and distract from the story’s focus on plot and characters. Cliched tropes make our stories feel predictable and uninspired. Unbalanced power dynamics make the conflict clearly one-sided and uninteresting. These issues and many more can hinder your amazing techno magic stories. So ask yourself:

• Is this detail important for the story’s main plot and characters?
  • Or is this just something you needed to know as a writer that can stay in your notes?
• How does technology and magic influence each other in my story?
  • Are there interesting conflicts, synergies, or dependencies between the two?
• Have I clearly defined the rules and limitations of both technology and magic in my world?
  • Are these rules consistent throughout the story?

Writing Exercise: Blending Technology and Magic

Create a short story or scene (500-1000 words) that effectively blends technology and magic in a cohesive world.

Imagine a world where:

1. Advanced nanotechnology exists for medical purposes.
2. Magic users can manipulate energy fields to affect living beings.

1. Establish the Rules (15 minutes)

Before writing, clearly define:

• Three capabilities of the nanotechnology
• Three abilities of the magic users
• Two limitations for each (nanotechnology and magic)
• One way in which technology and magic interact or complement each other

2. Create Your Characters (10 minutes)

Develop two main characters:

• A technologist specializing in medical nanotech
• A magic user focusing on healing spells

Give each character a name, a brief background, and a specific goal related to healing.

3. Write Your Scene (30-45 minutes)

Write a scene where these characters must work together to solve a medical crisis. Consider:

• How do their abilities complement each other?
• What challenges arise from the limitations you established?
• How do they overcome these challenges?

4. Reflect and Revise (15 minutes)

After writing, review your scene and consider:

• Is the interaction between technology and magic logical and consistent?
• Have you avoided contradictions or jarring juxtapositions?
• Is the balance of power between technology and magic appropriate?
• Does the integration serve the story and characters, or does it feel forced?

Make necessary revisions to strengthen the blend of technology and magic.

If you have extra time, write a short follow-up scene that explores an unintended consequence of combining the nanotechnology and magic in your world.
