Introduction
Welcome to the Myers Fiction April Newsletter! I’m looking forward to another month of working on science fiction and fantasy with you and hope what we’ve covered so far has been beneficial. If this is your first visit to a Myers Fiction post, welcome! Today’s newsletter explores how Science Fiction and Fantasy shape reality, upcoming events, and a creative writing exercise.
The reason I wanted to talk about the impact of science fiction and fantasy on the real world is because sometimes we need a reminder of why we write in these genres. This reminder isn’t to make you feel pressured to write a certain way, but a reminder of the power of words, especially the written word. Think of how many books, movies, or other story forms include book burning to remove and control the sharing of thought and knowledge. So, there’s something to these books we write, and don’t let anyone discount what you write.
The Impact of Science Fiction and Fantasy on the Real World
In this feature article, we’ll delve into the profound influence that science fiction and fantasy genres have had on shaping the social aspects of the real world. From literature to film, and beyond, these genres have sparked societal reflection and change in various ways. Often these are more subtle than people recognize as the format of the storytelling teaches without sounding like a lecture. Science fiction and fantasy novels have sparked transformative ideas by asking important “what if” questions and exploring human relationships.
Exploring Visionary Ideas
Science fiction and fantasy literature actively explores visionary ideas that often mirror or inspire societal advancements. Conceptual elements from speculative fiction have ignited innovative technologies, influenced scientific research, and even laid the groundwork for societal paradigms. This is most often seen in Sci-Fi where the imagined technology becomes a real thing. While not every imagined technology appears in the projected time frame, they often appear in some form in the future.
The impact of speculative fiction stories on technological advancements cannot be overstated. In fact, numerous groundbreaking technologies, such as mobile phones, 3D holograms, and even the concept of robot servants, have all been rooted in or influenced by the imaginative narratives found within the realm of speculative fiction. These tales have served as a wellspring of inspiration, prompting innovators and inventors to turn fantasy into reality.
The notion of communication devices resembling modern mobile phones is often tied back to Star Trek, where the first “flip phone” appeared on the enterprise. Star Wars brought the breathtaking portrayal of 3D holograms in science fiction and it’s now used in places like Las Vegas to have Micheal Jackson come back and dance on stage. The very idea of robotic assistants can all be traced back to the fertile ground of speculative fiction. While we have nowhere near the same level of artificial intelligence directing robots, the building blocks have started with something as simple as the rumba. Eventually we may reach the same technologies as in Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot, or Arthur C. Clarke’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s truly remarkable to witness how these fictional concepts have transcended the pages of books and made their way into our everyday lives, shaping the world as we know it.
Here are a few more Technological Advancements that were driven by Science Fiction and Fantasy:
- Arthur C. Clarke’s concept of geostationary communications satellites in his 1945 paper “Extra-Terrestrial Relays” predated and inspired modern satellite communications.
- The Tricorder concept from Star Trek inspired the development of modern portable sensing and diagnostic devices like diabetic glucose monitors.
While Science Fiction is busy shaping future technologies, it also works hand in hand with fantasy to change cultural perceptions and the ways we deal with life.
Shaping Cultural Perceptions
Beyond technological influence, these genres have also shaped cultural perceptions and attitudes. Through thought-provoking narratives and multidimensional characters, they have addressed real-world issues, challenged stereotypes, and prompted discussions on diversity, equality, and societal norms.
The intricacies of fictional worlds in the fantasy genre serve as a reflection of the diversity and complexity present in our own reality. By crafting unique races, cultures, and subcultures, authors bring to life a dynamic tapestry of societal evolution. Each element, though fantastical, often mirrors aspects of our own world, whether intentionally or not. These reflections provide readers with the opportunity to explore familiar themes and issues through a fresh and imaginative lens.
Journeys to different realms, shifting allegiances, and interactions with diverse races allow writers to seamlessly incorporate contemporary and historical challenges into the fabric of these genres. In doing so, they invite readers to contemplate and empathize with an array of struggles and triumphs, drawing captivating parallels to our own experiences.
Incorporating cultural stereotypes, as exemplified in the renowned works of the Lord of the Rings series, adds layers of depth and resonance in the narratives. By intertwining these elements, authors not only entertain and captivate audiences but also evoke introspection and discussion on the complexities of society and the human experience.
If you’re looking for a few more examples of cultural impact, then look more into the following:
- Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale sparked important conversations and political movements around women’s rights and totalitarianism.
- Urusla K. Le Guin’s novels explore gender roles on the planet Gethen, challenge traditional gender norms and inspired conversation on identity.
Fostering Imagination and Empathy
Science fiction and fantasy are key in fostering imagination and empathy. By immersing readers and audiences in fantastical realms and diverse characters, these genres encourage empathy for others’ experiences and promote open-mindedness.
Star Trek storylines brilliantly demonstrate the depiction of diverse and complex relationships in storytelling. The intricate dynamics between the characters in Star Trek storylines showcase a wide range of emotions, interactions, and conflicts, offering a rich tapestry for exploration. The relationships between iconic characters such as Captain Kirk and Spock or the emotions and connections among the crews of various starships offer compelling and thought-provoking narratives. These relationships not only serve as a driving force for the storylines but also reflect universal themes of friendship, loyalty, and understanding, resonating with audiences across the globe.
A few more examples of Science Fiction and Fantasy fostering imagination and empathy include:
- J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series highlighted the issues of discrimination, moral grayness, and empathy through the muggles and pure-blood wizards and witches.
- The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins, while set in a dystopian post-apocalyptic world, deals with the themes of economic inequality, oppression of the masses, and the dehumanizing impacts of violence, which prompts reflection on real world power imbalances and suffering.
Don’t miss out on the upcoming blog posts that will further explore the intriguing intersections between these beloved genres and our world.

April Writing Exercise: The Visionary Inventor’s Dream
Inspired by how science fiction has sparked real technological advancements, this exercise challenges you to imagine and describe a futuristic invention that currently only exists in fiction.
- Choose a famous science fiction story, film, or novel that features an imaginary technology or device that fascinated you.
- Conduct research on the historical context and scientific knowledge available when that work was written. What seemed implausible or far-fetched at that time?
- Now, put yourself in the shoes of a visionary inventor living in that era. Describe your first encounter with the fictional technology through the story – what thoughts and ideas did it spark in your mind?
- Outline the core scientific principles, materials, and processes you would need to develop to try and make this technology a reality based on the scientific understanding of that time period.
- Write a fictional journal entry or letter detailing your early experimentation and prototypes towards realizing this invention. What challenges did you face? What breakthroughs did you achieve?
- Fast forward a few decades and describe how your hard work and perseverance has finally paid off – the once fictitious technology is now a reality impacting society. How has it changed people’s lives? What new possibilities has it unlocked?
This creative exercise allows you to experience the journey of turning science fiction into science fact by embodying a real-world visionary. Pay close attention to historical accuracy, scientific plausibility within that era, and envision overcoming technological hurdles – just as pioneering inventors had to do when drawing inspiration from imaginative fiction.
